Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs 2016

Founded by Charles Mortet, the domaine gained fame with the exceptional 1993 vintage by his son Denis, who sadly passed away in 2006. Denis emphasized the importance of vineyard work, a passion now carried on by his son Arnaud and daughter Clémence. The domaine focuses on producing the finest, ripest fruit to create wines that are “a pleasure to drink young or old.” Arnaud praised the 2016 vintage for its balanced ripeness and elegance. Despite losing 30–70% of the crop to frost, mildew was effectively managed, and fewer whole bunches were used compared to 2015.

They 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs was reduced by 30% production, with 30% whole bunch and 30% new oak. It has a well-defined blackberry and wild strawberry bouquet with subtle rose petal aromas. The palate is well balanced with supple red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, just a subtle chalkiness to the texture toward the finish, but a very mineral-rich aftertaste in situ. Though densely textured, this red offers ripe black currant, black cherry and violet aromas and flavors. The tannins are ripe and the vibrant acidity keeps this defined on the long aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2038. - Wine Spectator
